Abdul Rahman
Abdul Rahman Ramadhan has been a part of the Camerapix family for close to four decades. Beginning his career in 1978, Abdul worked closely with the acclaimed photojournalist and Camerapix founder, Mohamed Amin.
Having specialized as a sound engineer, Abdul has experienced and recorded the sounds of genocide, war, revolution, anarchy and famine in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Sudan, Somalia, and Rwanda.
Abdul was awarded the prestigious Founder’s Award by the Association of International Broadcasters in late 2016 for his “outstanding contribution to the international media industry” and was the first African recipient of the Award.
He was recently awarded ‘The East African Nubian Community Award’, recognizing his lifetime achievements in the media industry.
In an award-winning documentary, ‘The Sound Man’ Abdul recounts his extraordinary and often heartbreaking career covering crisis zones throughout East Africa, providing gripping details about the civil war in Sudan, the genocide in Rwanda, the revolution in Somalia and Ethiopia, and the current tribal conflicts in Kenya, while also highlighting the risks to journalists.
63-year-old Abdul still travels the continent with the Camerapix crew and continues to reside in his childhood home in Africa’s largest slum, Kibera.
